Blaquesmith met Rachel as a young man in the future and was immediately attracted to her because he could telepathically see her "aura" and he knew that this was a powerful mutant.  As a result he called her the "Bright Lady" and devoted himself to her although she initially rejected him.  He is a master at fixing and creating technology.  He now stays with Rachel's brother, Nathan Summers (Cable) in the present.
